In fact, some people I know or come across before don’t know what is empathy or acknowledge the importance of empathy at all! It sounds shocking but truth is, yes, this type of person exists.

So what is empathy? Empathy is the ability to feel what another person is feeling. It’s the ability to understand and share another person’s emotional state. Empathy allows us to connect with others, to see the world from their perspective, and to understand their feelings.
There are different types of empathy:-
- Cognitive empathy is the ability to understand another person’s thoughts and feelings in response to a situation. For example, if a friend tells you that he is being scolded by a rude customer even though he did nothing wrong to aggravate the customer, and he responded by smiling and serving the customer professionally still, you will be able to understand your friend’s actions on the situation and his feelings in face of that rude customer. However, this does not mean you will share the same feelings.
- Affective empathy is the ability to feel what another person is feeling and respond appropriately. For example, if your friend’s dog died, and your friend is grieving over the dog’s death very deeply, you will be able to comprehend and feel similar grief, while offering either the right words or appropriate actions of comfort needed by your friend. This sort of emotional empathy may, however, lead to affecting your own emotions to a certain degree.
- Compassionate empathy is a combination of cognitive and affective empathy, otherwise known as empathic concern. It’s the ability to understand and feel what another person is feeling, and to want to help them.

In my opinion, empathy is a powerful tool. As it is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person, you will be able to imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s shoes or by actually feeling what they are feeling.
Here are some of the obvious benefits of empathy:-
- Improved communication. When people can empathize with one another, they are better able to communicate their feelings and understand what the other person is saying. This can lead to improved relationships both at home and at work, especially seen in great managers.
- Increased compassion. I always feel that the world needs more compassion and less selfishness! When people can empathize with others, they are more likely to feel compassion for them. This can lead to people being more willing to help others overcome self-defeating thoughts or any adverse situations, both on a personal level and on a global level.
- Reduced stress. This may sound contradictory, since people with affective empathy may experience more stress having felt other people’s emotions themselves, but this is only if you cannot manage your own emotions well enough. In fact, empathy actually helps to reduce stress in yourself – it gives you a wonderful sense of achievement when you are being there for people who are in emotional distress, and that they feel relieved when they can find a listening ear and someone who can understand what they are going through. You will feel happier and less stressful in return!

Now that we understand the importance of empathy, we know that it is one of the most important skills to have in your social toolbox. You are ready to incorporate more empathy in life, but how to practice empathy properly?

- Pay attention to your own feelings and emotions. This can help you better understand the feelings of others.
- Try to see things from the other person’s perspective. This can help you understand their thoughts and feelings better.
- Be patient and understanding when listening to someone else. Don’t judge them or try to fix their problems. Just listen and let them talk – refuse the urge to interrupt them at every single thought.
